In 2019, I left my career as an analytics consultant in Chicago to begin a career in remodeling as a custom home framer in the Northern mountains of Utah. After 8 months I moved back to Oak Park to reunite with my girlfriend and her new puppy.

Along with the move, I began working for the 5th largest remodeling company in Illinois, Synergy Builders. I trained directly under their lead carpenter where I relearned the basics of framing before leading installs of windows and doors, and eventually graduating to finish work including cabinets, crown, and trim. Most importantly, I learned the value of aiming small to miss small, and the five commandments of carpentry (Plumb, Level, Square, Parallel, True). I remind myself of these lessons each day I step onto a jobsite.Â
Since joining the industry, I have always spent my weekends learning additional trades through side-jobs. When I lived in Utah, I mounted TVs and assembled furniture. When I returned, I began taking on fan, switch, and outlet installations, in addition to sink and bathtub drain repairs. After building multi-year relationships with some valued clients, I added larger projects such as basement and garage remodels, or the building of large (>900SF) multi-tiered decks. I have also furthered my education through a weekend course in roof framing and a 10-week course to pursue my electrical license.
